There are certain events that mark the life of every museum and this is particularly true concerning major donations to its collections.
Thus, beginning on October 3rd the Fine Arts Museum has the honor of exhibiting eleven paintings of exceptional quality donated by Madame Ann L. Oppenheimer, daughter of Julius Oppenheimer, director of Strasbourg’s influential leather factory Adler & Oppenheimer until 1938.
This series is mainly comprised of Nordic paintings, including two landscapes from the circle of Jan Brueghel de Velours, a portrait of a Humanist attributed to Quentin Metsys as well as Italian works featuring a portrait by Tintoretto.
The artwork, presented to the public beginning October 3rd will be on show for several months as part of a group exhibit before each joins its respective historical series within the museum.
In the course of its recent history Strasbourg’s Museum of Fine Arts has been graced with a number of prestigious donations. Following a donation granted by Othon Kaufman and François Schlageter (Italian Baroque paintings) and the Eisenbeth couple (Nordic series), Madame Oppenheimer’s bequest has fulfilled the museum’s long-standing interest in this collection dating back to 1915 when Wilhelm von Bode was Director of the Museums during annexation.
The city of Strasbourg is delighted to present these eleven works to the public in honor of Madame Oppenheimer’s kind generosity and extends warm thanks for her family’s attachment and unfailing loyalty to our city despite history’s violence and vicissitudes.
With this bequest and this exhibition, the Oppenheimer name claims its rightful place in Strasbourg’s history and cultural heritage.
